Furs, Pearls and Anxiety-Self Portrait
Project type
self-portrait, nude, anxiety, recycled materials art, trash art
Furs, Pearls and Anxiety is a self-portrait constructed entirely from salvaged materials, exploring the mental weight of anxious spiraling and the conflict between outward appearances and internal unrest. The piece captures a moment of vulnerability—the kind that lives just beneath the surface—where beauty, luxury, and control begin to fray.
The background mimics a room built from language, created using layers of newspaper clippings and charcoal to represent the overwhelming presence of thoughts and what-ifs. It forms a psychological space, one where the viewer is immersed in the chaos of an anxious mind.
At the center, a fragmented figure emerges—delicate and exposed—built from broken jewelry, faux pearls, plastic fragments, and buttons. Drapery tassel samples are cut and reconstructed to form a fur coat—a garment meant for warmth or status, here repurposed to represent both burden and expectation.
The entire piece is housed within a repurposed antique frame, anchoring it in the past while elevating the emotional weight of the subject. Furs, Pearls and Anxiety challenges viewers to consider the emotional labor of appearing composed while silently unraveling.
