A Mother's Quilt

2024
Medium: Magazine clippings, fabric scraps, found objects, fortune cookie fortunes, miscellaneous plastics, prescription medicine bottles (human and veterinary), broken jewelry
Description:
A Mother’s Quilt explores the intertwined themes of maternal care and our connection to the Earth. Created entirely from recycled materials, the piece portrays a mother cradling her child, her long hair enveloping them in a gesture of protection. Landscapes of mountains, farmland, and ocean flow beneath them, symbolizing the nurturing forces of nature. Yet, elements of pollution and plastic are intricately woven into the scene, acknowledging how environmental degradation inevitably seeps into even our most sacred relationships. Inspired by a photo of the artist and her son and begun on Mother’s Day 2024, the piece serves as both personal narrative and environmental reflection. It received Honorable Mention at the Earth and Art Show at the Berkeley Arts Council in West Virginia.
